A RECIPE + SPICES TO CREATE
Strawberry Hibiscus Trifle
for Two
FOR THE TRIFLES:
angel food cake (or any white cake), cut into small squares
5 strawberries, diced
whipped cream
vanilla bean infused custard
2 tbsp hibiscus syrup
FOR THE HIBISCUS SYRUP:
2 cups water
1 cup sugar
½ cup dried hibiscus flowers
- Combine all simple syrup ingredients into a medium size sauce pan and bring to a boil, stirring frequently.
- Once boiling, simmer over low heat until the mixture has reduced in size and has a syrup like consistency (this should take about 15 minutes). Let your simple syrup cool before using!
- Cut the angel food cake into small squares. Add half of your cake pieces to a medium size bowl and add the hibiscus syrup. Toss to coat each piece.
- Begin assembling your trifles! Add the hibiscus infused cake to the bottom, followed by your custard, plain cake pieces, strawberries, and whipped cream.
- Repeat until the trifle cups are full and enjoy!
Expiry: Consume immediately after making or the cake will get too mushy!
For this recipe, I purchased a custard powder and combined it with fresh vanilla bean and some milk. You can make your own custard if you'd like to, but purchasing powder is the easiest way to make this dessert!
