Risa Weaver-Enion is a professional photographer based in Sacramento, California. Through her company Risa James Photography, she specializes in food and beverage photography, specifically cocktails. She works with small distilleries, wineries, and purveyors of cocktail accessories to create beautiful imagery for them to use in their marketing efforts. Her book, Cocktails for Everyday Drinking, was published in 2022 and is available at all online booksellers.
When she’s not photographing cocktails, Risa and her husband love to travel, both within the United States and internationally. Many of their trips have been wine-focused, but they’ve visited their fair share of distilleries around the world as well.
Anyone who wants to reach out to Risa to ask questions about photography, cocktails, or anything else, can find her on Instagram @risajamesphotography, on the web at risajamesphoto.com, or over email at risajamesphoto [at] gmail.com. She’s always happy to answer questions and give advice.
a little bit about the recipe
You can easily jazz up a margarita by salting the rim of your glass with something other than plain salt. By adding some guajillo chile powder to sea salt, you get a subtle earthy smokiness that complements the vegetal notes from the tequila.

directions
  • Sprinkle some fleur de sel into a small bowl. Add some guajillo chile powder to the salt, then stir to combine. Sprinkle the mixture onto a small plate in a pile/line.

  • Cut a lime into wedges by slicing it in half through the long end, then slicing each half into half again. Cut a slit into one wedge, then insert the lip of a rocks glass into the slit and rotate to coat the rim in lime juice. Dip the wet rim into the pile of salt and rotate so that the salt mixture coats the rim.

  • Combine 2 oz. blanco tequila, 1 oz. fresh lime juice, 1/2 oz. agave syrup, and 1/4 oz. orange liqueur in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake for about 7-8 seconds. Place fresh ice cubes into your prepared rocks glass, then strain contents of shaker over the fresh ice. Garnish with a lime wedge.

expiry
Salt mixture will keep indefinitely. Drink should be consumed immediately.
tips
Coat only half of the rim of the glass in lime juice and salt to give the drinker the option of having a sip without a salted rim.

Orange liqueur comes in many varieties/brands. Cointreau and Grand Marnier are both brands of orange liqueur. Anything labeled "orange curaçao" or "dry curaçao" will work equally well. (Even blue curaçao is technically orange flavored, if you would like to make a blue margarita.)
