Risa Weaver-Enion is a professional photographer based in Sacramento, California. Through her company Risa James Photography, she specializes in food and beverage photography, specifically cocktails. She works with small distilleries, wineries, and purveyors of cocktail accessories to create beautiful imagery for them to use in their marketing efforts. Her book, Cocktails for Everyday Drinking, was published in 2022 and is available at all online booksellers.
When she’s not photographing cocktails, Risa and her husband love to travel, both within the United States and internationally. Many of their trips have been wine-focused, but they’ve visited their fair share of distilleries around the world as well.
Anyone who wants to reach out to Risa to ask questions about photography, cocktails, or anything else, can find her on Instagram @risajamesphotography, on the web at risajamesphoto.com, or over email at risajamesphoto [at] gmail.com. She’s always happy to answer questions and give advice.
a little bit about the recipe
National Sangria Day is December 20. Sangria is a great summer beverage, but having Sangria Day in December gives us an opportunity to use all the delightful spices found in Selefina’s Mulling Spice Mix: cinnamon, orange peel, clove, allspice, cardamom, and star anise, which also make great cocktail garnishes!

directions
  • To make mulled wine, combine one 750 ml bottle of red wine with one 1.5 ounce packet of Selefina mulling spice mix in a medium saucepan. Heat over medium-low for about 30 minutes. Do not bring to a boil or simmer. You don’t want the wine to cook away, but heat helps the spices infuse into the wine. Remove from heat after 30 minutes and let spices continue to infuse until the wine has cooled to room temperature. Pour wine through a cheesecloth-lined funnel into a glass pitcher.

  • To make sangria, cut one crisp red apple and one red pear into slices. Add sliced fruit to pitcher of cooled wine. Add 1/2 cup brandy and 1/2 cup orange liqueur, then stir gently to combine. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

  • To make cocktail, fill a stemless wine glass or rocks glass with ice. Add 4 ounces mulled wine sangria to glass, then top with 2 ounces club soda. Use tongs to remove an apple and pear slice from the pitcher and add to drink. Garnish with a whole cinnamon stick and whole star anise.

expiry
Drink within 2 weeks. Replace fruit if necessary.
tips
Recommended wines: California Pinot Noir, Beaujolais (Gamay), or Spanish Garnacha.

After removing the mulling spices from the wine, place them back in the saucepan covered with water and heat over low to fragrance your home.
