a little bit about the recipe
Glühwein is a Christmastime mulled spice wine or cider. It is customarily served in Germany and Austria to holiday shoppers while they browse shops and market stalls. Glühwein is similar to Scandinavian Glögg, but is generally lower in sugar. Glühwein roughly translates from German to mean “smoldering", or "glow wine.”

directions
Combine all the ingredients except for the vanilla in a small saucepan. Bring just to a boil. Reduce heat to the lowest setting and simmer, partially covered, for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla and steep while covered, for 5 minutes. Strain and serve in a heat-proof glass (or ceramic) mug.
tips
A kid-friendly version called Kinderpunsch is made using the same mulling spices, but swaps out the wine and brandy for apple and cranberry juices.
