SPECIAL EQUIPMENT:
CAST IRON SKILLET
PIE PAN
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- First, prepare the crisp topping: In a mixing bowl, combine all the dry ingredients and stir well.
- Add the butter and use a pastry blender or fork to work it in until the mixture is crumbly and holds together slightly when pressed. Set aside.
- Now, prepare the apple filling: Thinly slice or cube the apples.
- In a large bowl, toss the apples with the spices, coconut sugar, and tapioca flour until evenly coated.
- Warm a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add the butter and let it melt, then stir in the apple mixture. Cook for several minutes, until the apples begin to soften and the sugar melts into a syrupy, caramelized texture.
- You can either leave the apples in the skillet to bake or transfer to a pie dish. Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apple mixture.
- Bake for 22-25 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and crisp.
- Let cool slightly before serving—best enjoyed warm with a scoop of your favorite ice cream!
Store this apple crisp tightly covered in the fridge. This recipe is best enjoyed within 3-4 days.
You can peel your apples if you prefer, or leave the skin on for ease.
